Scouts re-started after Easter and we have had an exciting term so far. At our first night back, we completed the Fire Safety Activity Badge with a trip down to Wargrave Fire Station to learn about the safe use of different types of fire extinguishers. We also covered fire safety at home and at camp. We all had a practise with a CO2 extinguisher which is best used on electrical equipment, which was cold but fun! A big thank you to the team at Wargrave Fire Station for a really interesting evening.
At the end of April we completed our Summer Term Night Hike from Dinton Pastures along the River Lodden to Twyford Station. It was very muddy but the Scouts managed to get to the destination in good time to enjoy a well deserved (and now traditional) bag of chips!
We completed the planning phase for 1st Wargrave’s contribution to the UK National Scouting “A Million Hands” community impact programme. Our selected topic is Mental Wellbeing, and we will be supporting local charity Camp Mohawk over 2 evenings this term. Camp Mohawk is a multi-functional day centre for children with special needs and their families, set in 5 acres of beautiful countryside, just outside Wargrave. Throughout the year the centre provides a range of activities, facilities and natural space to encourage children with a variety of special needs to play, socialise and learn in a secure and caring environment. We plan to spend the first evening at the hut building bug hotels, and then we will install these and also carry out various onsite support duties at their woodland location. We are really looking forward to putting some of the ideas that the Scouts brainstormed into action, and helping an important local charity. As usual we have lots of new and challenging activities this term to try out, including: An “Aeronautical evening”, Archery, Bridge Building, Rifles and Pistol Target Shooting. Along the way we will also invest our new Scouts and award the badges that have been earned. With the lighter and warmer evenings, a good amount of time will be spent outside up at Bowsey Woods, playing wide games and cooking!
In 2016 we are offering our Scouts an amazing total of 14 nights camping, and this includes the Youlbury Family Camp in May, and the Dorneywood Big Camp in June. For Summer Camp we are really looking forward to taking half the troop overseas to the Finland International Jamboree in Roihu between July 20th to July 28th. See our Finland Blog for the latest information.
The Summer Term ends with our BBQ Party on July 4th.
