Welcome back! Scouts has restarted and we have a fun-packed Autumn Term Programme planned, which started on Monday 7th September when we were entertained by Nige, who shared his experiences from the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan.
Nige led the Unit 7 or “Kinryu” UK Contingent to Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi City, Japan earlier in the Summer. Kinryu consisted of 27 Young Members from Berkshire Scouts, 9 Young People from British Scouting Overseas and 4 Leaders.
Our Scouts listened intently to the story of Nige’s trip to Hiroshima, and we also enjoyed looking through Nigel’s collection of memorabilia and swaps, including some impressive badges, a rather attractive kimono, plus various neckers and woggles from many different countries.
Nige’s experience in planning and leading an International Scouting trip will be invaluable as we look ahead to our adventure next July at the Finland Jamboree. It was an inspiring presentation and several Scouts expressed an interest in potentially volunteering for selection for the 24th World Scout Jamboree in 2019. This will be held in the New River Gorge area of West Virginia USA, a venue that will offer white-water rafting, rock climbing, and mountain biking! 2019 will be a busy year as there will also be WINGS 2019 in Windsor Great Park (see our WINGS 2014 blog post – now that was a lot of fun!). Because we missed our Summer BBQ, Hot Dogs were served as a special treat!
Big thanks to Nige for a great evening and start to our Autumn Term Programme. Highlights to look forward to include several new events such as our Elastic Band Car Challenge, Oil Drum Biscuits and Twists, as well as the return of our hugely popular Fright Nite! and Christmas Bake-off activities.
We will also spend 2 nights Camping, at the Loddon District Great Breakfast Chase on October 10th, and at the Family Day/BBQ and Scout Camp on October 17th. For our “Troop Night Out” we are going to the Cinema! The term ends with our traditional Xmas Party on Monday December 14th.
