scouts-gbc-2016

1st Wargrave Scouts recently competed in the annual Loddon District “Great Breakfast Chase” (GBC) competition which was held at Dorneywood in Burnham Beeches. Our team called “Alpha” consisted of Jacob, Joe and Matthew.

dsc_2809Teams have to be 4 to 6 Scouts but we had a Scout drop out at the last minute.  Fortunately the organisers allowed the team to take part. With one Scout down, the team was kindly shadowed by Christian aka “Comet” a Leader from 1st Twyford Scouts.  Thank you Christian for assisting with the safe running of the event.

Our three musketeers set-out in the light at 5:45pm after a supper of hot dogs and burgers, and had to successfully navigate in-between 15 waypoints around a course which consisted of footpaths, over forests, fields and roads.  There were 6 bases along the course where the Scouts had to perform various mental and physical challenges including memory tests and solving puzzles which contributed to their overall score. Over the course of the evening Scouts had to win and then carry (and keep intact!) two pieces of bread, two eggs, some tea bags and a can of beans!

They arrived back early at about 9pm so the course took just over 3 hours to complete.  Some groups left between 8 and 9pm and arrived back in the rain between 12 and 1pm.  1st Wargrave’s speedy time around the course, and their performance on the challenges at the bases contributed to a well deserved 3rd place out of 17 teams!  Looking back over recent years, our score in 2016 is by far our best result and our Scouts should be proud of their efforts and a job well done.

Lastly, a big thank you to Paul Worthington, one of our Wargrave Leaders, who co-ordinated our entry and supported the team at base camp overnight. On the Sunday morning Mathew, Jacob and Joe cooked and then tucked into a full English Breakfast made up of the items they had won the night before.  The points from this competition will go towards this years Murray Plate score for the troop.
