Our Spring Term programme has been busy with Japan-In-A-Box, Burns Supper, Hobbies and Interests, Laser Quest and Chinese New Year evenings, and we also “Camped at The Hut” at the end of February.
Unfortunately we didn’t get anywhere near the numbers we needed to run a Summer Camp with Hurst in August, or a for a camp on our own in July. Therefore we are cancelling our plans for a camp in the Summer Holidays this year. We will focus our attentions to Finland next year and for boys that leave us between now and then, we are committed to include them in our 2016 plans, as long as they remain active in Scouting in some shape or form (e.g. Explorer or Young Leader) so they don’t miss out.
This means that for 2015, the Loddon District “Big Camp” – on the Early May Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 2nd to Monday 5th – is essentially our Summer Camp, as it were! The camp takes place at Dorneywood near Burnham Beeches, where we camped in October for our Survival Camp. So far we have 9 Scouts attending and we envisage the costs to be around £35 each to include all food, camp fees and organised activities that are planned, which currently include:
- Pioneering Challenge – construction of a bridge over the pond, using large poles, ropes pulleys and ground anchors
- Fire lighting & Backwards cooking – construct a tin oven and cook biscuits
- Orienteering – around a timed course in Burnham Beeches woods
- Stretchers & Pressure Lamps – making emergency stretchers and instruction in the safe use of lamps
- Crafts – woggle making and other creative tasks
There will also be wide games, and also some “free-time” for the Scouts to explore the site. We are all looking forward to another enjoyable camp. We have 4 Scout Leaders attending Nige, Richard, Paul Worthington and Pete Walsh.
At 1st Wargrave we currently have 19 Scouts, and we look forward to meeting and making friends with the 10 Cubs that plan to join us from the Puma and Wildcat packs, after Easter. We now have 4 leaders – a big welcome to Paul Worthington, who recently joined the leadership team with Nige, Richard and Pete W. Paul was previously the founding leader of our Woodchucks Beaver colony.
For sure the second half of the term will be just as busy, varied and fun! At 1st Wargrave Scouts we strive to offer a mixed and balanced programme, and as usual there will be lots of badge work and we will make use of the lighter and warmer evenings to spend more time outdoors, away from the hut in Bowsey Woods, and around the Village.
We have made some slight changes to the current programme, please view and download the latest version (v2) below.
