Group Family Camp 21–23 May 2010
Friday, 21st May saw Wargrave Scout Leaders and helpers pitching tents on site at Chalfont Heights where the group were hosting a Family Camp. They could not have been more lucky for there was glorious sunshine all afternoon; a stark contrast to last year when the tents were pitched against fierce winds.
Soon organisers were preparing supper for the 70+ people who were camping over the weekend.
This year some of the Cubs and Scouts surpassed themselves having had their last warning about going to sleep at midnight then waking up at 4.00 a.m a whole 1 ½ hours earlier than last year!!
But this didn’t seem to deter them from throwing themselves wholeheartedly into the activities on offer.
So what was there to do…
It was an opportunity to challenge mum and/or dad to see who could shoot the better score at archery or who could negotiate the rabbit run caving experience the quickest (and if you could do it in the dark with all the hatches closed it made beating your parents so much more pleasing!).
The biggest attraction seemed to be the unofficial competition going on amongst the crate stacking participants with the biggest score, obtained on Sunday morning, of 25 crates, being achieved by Mara Branet, exceeding the previous camp record of 24! Well done to everyone who participated.
There were, again this year, camp challenges to complete with bronze, silver and gold awards to be won. These challenges ranged from running backwards for 25m, with one foot tied to another Scout, without falling over or naming the Loddon District Flower through to explaining the difference between a burn and a scald & the treatment for both.
The activity sheets certainly kept all busy, whether completing or signing them off. After all those activities and challenges everybody was ravenous and could not wait to tuck into the mouth-watering barbeque on offer to the campers and day visitors who swelled the numbers to around 110 on the Saturday evening.
